What “how far” means here

Every number on this page is a great-circle distance — the shortest path over the Earth's surface, the line a plane would roughly fly. It is not a driving distance: roads wander, so the drive is usually 20–40% longer (why, with real examples). The bearing tells you which way the target lies from where you stand — 0° is true north, 90° due east.

The built-in distances, explained

Equator: your latitude in kilometers, essentially — each degree of latitude spans about 111 km, so at 40°N you're roughly 4,440 km from the equator. The poles: the remainder of the quarter-circle — equator distance and pole distance always add up to about 10,008 km. Your antipode — the point exactly opposite you through the Earth's center — is the one distance that's the same for everyone: about 20,015 km along the surface, whichever direction you set off. Is this the driving distance?
No — it's the straight-line (great-circle) distance, the shortest path over the Earth's surface. Driving is usually 20–40% longer because roads wander. Use it to grasp scale, compare directions, or answer "how far away is that, really".
How accurate is the distance?
The calculation itself is exact to within meters (spherical-earth math). The practical limit is your own position fix — typically 5–25 m on a phone — which is negligible over city-to-city distances.
Why is my distance to the antipode always about 20,015 km?
Your antipode is the point exactly opposite you through the Earth's center, so every surface route to it is half the Earth's circumference — about 20,015 km — whichever direction you leave in. It's the one distance every person on Earth shares.
Does my location leave my device?
The distance math runs entirely in your browser. Only a place you type into the search box is sent to the geocoder to be turned into coordinates — your own position never is.
