How the direction is calculated (and why accuracy matters)

We use the great-circle bearing — the initial heading of the shortest path over the Earth's surface from your coordinates to the Kaaba — which is the method adopted by mainstream Islamic scholarship for distant locations. The compass reading is corrected for your local magnetic declination, because a raw magnetometer points to magnetic north, which can differ from true north by more than 10° in some regions — enough to matter. Your bearing and distance to Makkah are shown numerically too, so you can verify with any quality compass.

Checking without a sensor

Desktops and some tablets have no compass. Alternatives that work anywhere: point the printed bearing with a physical compass (remember it reads magnetic north — we show the magnetic bearing separately for this); or use the sun: at your local solar noon (shown on our sun tool) shadows point exactly north or south depending on hemisphere, giving you a true reference line. The map view also draws the qibla line from your position so you can orient by streets and buildings.

Step by step

How accurate is this Qibla direction?
The bearing itself is exact great-circle math from your coordinates to the Kaaba. Practical accuracy depends on your phone's compass — calibrate with a figure-8 and stay clear of metal and magnets; we correct magnetic to true north automatically for your area.
Does it work without internet or without a compass sensor?
Once loaded, the calculation is fully offline. Without a compass sensor (most desktops), you still get the precise bearing in degrees plus a map line — usable with any physical compass or by orienting to streets.
