How your ZIP code is found
Your coordinates are reverse-geocoded against postal-zone data: the code shown belongs to the address point nearest to where you stand. With GPS permission granted this is street-level accurate. The IP fallback, by contrast, can only guess the code of your provider's service area — fine for a weather forecast, wrong for a form that matters.
ZIP codes are delivery routes, not neat areas
A US ZIP code is a set of postal delivery routes, not a drawn boundary — the tidy “ZIP code map” is a statistical approximation (the Census Bureau's ZCTA). Two consequences: standing near a route boundary, the nearest addressed building decides which code you get; and a single large building or campus can own a ZIP code of its own. If two tools disagree by one digit near a boundary, both are being honest about a genuinely fuzzy line.
