Why 1852 metres, exactly

The nautical mile is the only everyday unit drawn on the planet itself: it began as one minute of latitude — 1/60 of a degree along any meridian. Sail one nautical mile due north and your latitude rises by one minute; sixty of them make a degree. Because the Earth is slightly flattened, a real minute of latitude varies a little (about 1843 m at the equator, 1862 m at the poles), so the International Nautical Mile was fixed by convention at exactly 1852 metres in Monaco in 1929, and that definition has held ever since. No feet, no inches in its ancestry — it's geometry, rounded once.

The knot is simply one nautical mile per hour, and its name is older than its precision: ships once measured speed with a chip log — a board on a knotted line paid out over the stern while a sand-glass ran. The rule has one trap: never measure with the longitude scale along the top or bottom.
