Why Is My Location Wrong?
It depends which location is wrong. If you never saw a permission prompt, the site only guessed from your IP address — that's city-level at best and often a city off. If you granted permission and it's still off, you're debugging a real GPS/Wi-Fi fix: usually meters to a block, with different causes and different fixes.
First: which location is wrong?
Websites locate you two completely different ways, and they fail completely differently. Without asking, all a site has is your IP address — a database guess good to about a city. With your permission, it gets the device fix — GPS, Wi-Fi and cell fused by your phone or laptop, good to meters. The single most useful diagnostic question is therefore: did the browser ask me for location permission on this site? No prompt → you're annoyed at an IP guess. Prompt granted → you're debugging a real fix.
The city is wrong (IP guess)
An IP guess a city — or a country — off is normal, not a malfunction. Mobile carriers funnel entire regions through a few gateways; ISPs share one address among thousands of customers (CGNAT); databases lag ISP reshuffles by months; and a VPN replaces your IP with the exit server's on purpose. It's off by meters to a block (real fix)
With permission granted, errors are physics. Indoors or between tall buildings, signals bounce before reaching you and the fix degrades to tens of meters (how GPS accuracy works covers why). Battery-saver modes silently switch to coarse positioning. A first fix after being indoors starts from the last known point and takes 30–60 seconds to settle — read the dot after it stops moving. Quick wins, in order: step outside or to a window, give it a minute, disable power-saving location modes, and compare against the accuracy circle — a position 15 m off with a 20 m circle is the system working exactly as designed.
It's wildly wrong on a laptop (Wi-Fi database)
Desktops and laptops have no GPS; with permission they locate via nearby Wi-Fi networks matched against crowd-sourced maps. That map can be wrong in entertaining ways: a router that moved house still 'lives' at the old address for weeks; a phone hotspot carries its home entry on holiday; a rare access point pins you to wherever it was first logged. The tell is a precise-looking position in a completely wrong place. Fixes: toggle Wi-Fi off/on and retry (it re-ranks visible networks), plug in a network cable and you fall back to the IP guess, or simply wait — the databases re-learn moved routers within days to weeks as passing phones observe them.
The 60-second diagnosis
Run the comparison yourself: open what is my location and allow the prompt — that's your device fix — then look at what is my IP for the database guess. Seeing both side by side almost always identifies which one a misbehaving website was using, and the sections above give the fix.
